Section 6 of a Safety Data Sheet provides information about what to do in the event of a spill or release of chemicals. If you will be using certain cleaners, disinfectants, or sanitizers on a regular basis, take the time to review the SDS before using any cleaning product or solution.

If there is a spill, protect yourself and your coworkers from being exposed to hazardous chemicals by knowing what to do. For example, making sure there is good ventilation and wearing proper PPE is essential to avoiding injury.

Scenario: An employee accidentally knocked over an open bottle of ammonia. She immediately put on goggles and gloves, closed the bottle, and quickly reviewed the SDS. She then tossed  paper towels over the spill. She opened a window to get air circulation. She made sure the towels soaked up all the spilled ammonia and threw them away in the proper location. Finally, she removed the PPE and washed her hands thoroughly and let her supervisor know about the spill.
